She Said: Sian Fujikawa

She Said: Sian Fujikawa

1. Introduce yourself: your name and where you’re from.

Sian Fujikawa from New York City by way of Montauk, Vermont, Switzerland, Florida and some other things.

2. Where do you live?

Santa Monica, CA.

3. What was it like growing up with an entrepreneur as a father (Michael Gordon, founder of Bumble and Bumble) and did his success inspire you to start your own business?

I think subconsciously, yes. I just always assumed I would start my own business. My dad and I are very close and I’m always asking him questions about how he did it.  I think it’s important to use the resources you have, particularly the wisdom of your elders.

4. When did you open Love Yoga, and have you been able to continue teaching since the pandemic?

Love Yoga opened in 2011 in Montauk, NY and in 2015, we opened in Los Angeles, CA. I’ve been teaching on zoom and outdoor classes on a bluff overlooking the beach. That’s the great thing about LA - you can be outside all year.

5. How did you meet your husband?

I picked him up after a yoga class. Initially he was very afraid, but I wore him down.

6. What does your average day look like at the moment?

Mostly it’s spent chasing and kissing my 1-year-old daughter, and if I’m very lucky, I get to surf.

7. Other than yoga, how do you stay fit?

Well, I surf. And I clean obsessively. And sometimes I do squats while I’m brushing my teeth.

8. Do you follow any diet?

My husband and I became vegan after watching Game Changers on Netflix. I don’t eat sugar unless it’s something exceptional and I don’t really drink. I’ve noticed those two things destroy my immunity and energy.

9. What is your favorite spot in the world to practice yoga?

Our back deck in the morning because I can be nude and in full sun.

10. If you could teach anyone, past or present, who would it be?

My grandmother. I adored her like a second mother but she really could have used some yoga.

11. What is your most guilty pleasure?

Drugs probably. Just kidding. I don’t know … probably my fascination with politics but it’s more pain than pleasure.

12. Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.

I got expelled from five high schools, and I have a master’s in psychology.

13. What would you say is the key to a balanced life?

Wake up every morning and say thank you for the precious life you have been given.
